You probably drink from your water bottle more than you use any pan in your kitchen. That makes it one of the easiest places to cut back on plastic. The two best materials are stainless steel and glass: neither holds flavors, and neither needs a plastic liner.
One thing to watch: the body of a bottle may be steel or glass, but the lid, straw and spout are usually plastic. Below we compare five popular bottles and tell you exactly what touches your drink.
Quick picks
24 hours cold, leak-proof cap.
Straw or swig, one lid.
18/8 steel, dishwasher safe.
Steel, bamboo, silicone.
Glass with silicone sleeve.

1. Hydro Flask 32 oz Wide Mouth: best overall
Hydro Flask’s 32-ounce bottle is a classic for a reason. Hydro Flask says the double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12, and the Flex Cap is leak-proof when closed. The wide mouth makes it easy to add ice and to clean.
What we like
- Steel interior with no flavor transfer
- Leak-proof cap for bags
- Wide mouth for ice and cleaning
- Big enough for a full day
Keep in mind
- Cap is plastic
- Heavier and larger than 24 oz bottles
- Powder coat can chip if dropped
2. Owala FreeSip 24 oz: best for sipping
The Owala FreeSip is one of the most popular bottles in the U.S. Its patented spout lets you sip through a built-in straw when upright, or tilt it back to drink from the spout. A push-button lid keeps the spout clean, and the carry loop doubles as a lock. Owala says it keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours.
What we like
- Two ways to drink
- Spout stays covered
- Fits most cup holders
- Many colors
Keep in mind
- More plastic parts in the lid than simple caps
- Lid has more pieces to clean
- Made for cold drinks
3. YETI Rambler 26 oz with Chug Cap: most durable
YETI builds its bottles from 18/8 kitchen-grade stainless steel and says they are puncture and rust resistant and dishwasher safe. The Chug Cap opens with a half twist for fast drinking and is leak-proof. YETI notes the Chug Cap is not meant for hot drinks.
What we like
- Very tough build
- Dishwasher safe, including the bottle
- No-sweat outside
- Leak-proof Chug Cap
Keep in mind
- Cap is plastic
- Not for hot drinks with this cap

4. Klean Kanteen Reflect 27 oz: least plastic
If you want the least plastic possible, look at the Klean Kanteen Reflect. Klean Kanteen says it has no paint, ink, coatings or plastic. The body is unpainted stainless steel, and the leak-proof cap is bamboo with stainless steel and food-grade silicone. It is single wall, so it does not keep drinks cold for long.
What we like
- Your drink touches only steel and silicone
- No paint to chip
- Simple and lightweight
- Looks great
Keep in mind
- Not insulated
- Bamboo cap needs hand washing
- Bottle can sweat with ice water
5. Lifefactory 22 oz Glass Bottle: best glass
Glass gives the cleanest taste of all. Lifefactory’s bottle has a wide mouth for ice, citrus or tea, and a silicone sleeve that helps prevent breakage and gives a non-slip grip. Lifefactory says the bottles are dishwasher safe with the sleeve on, and are made in the USA or France.
What we like
- Purest taste, nothing to absorb flavors
- Sleeve protects and grips
- Wide mouth
- Easy to see when it needs cleaning
Keep in mind
- Glass can still break
- Not insulated
- Flip cap is plastic
What to know before you buy
- Check what touches your drink. Steel or glass inside is great, but lids, straws and spouts are usually plastic. Bamboo and steel caps exist if this matters to you.
- Look for 18/8 (304) stainless steel. It is food grade and resists rust.
- About the bottom of insulated bottles: some vacuum-insulated bottles use a small sealing dot at the base that may contain lead. It is covered by a steel cap and does not touch your drink. If the bottom of your bottle is damaged and the cap comes off, replace the bottle. If you want to be sure, ask the brand.
- Insulated or not? Insulated bottles keep ice for a day but are heavier. Single-wall and glass bottles are lighter but warm up faster.
- Easy cleaning matters. A wide mouth and fewer lid parts make it easier to keep a bottle clean.
FAQ
Is stainless steel or glass better for a water bottle?
Both are great. Stainless steel is tougher and can be insulated. Glass gives the purest taste but is heavier and can break.
Are plastic lids safe?
Most brands use BPA-free plastic for lids. Your drink touches the lid only briefly, but if you want to avoid plastic completely, choose a steel or bamboo cap.
How often should I clean my bottle?
Rinse it daily and wash it with warm soapy water every few days. Take the lid apart regularly, since straws and spouts are where buildup happens.
